Scottish Schools Pipes and Drums Trust

About us

SSPDT is a national charity dedicated to supporting young people, strengthening communities, and preserving Scotland’s cultural heritage.

We believe that music is for everyone and that pipe bands have the power to change the course of young peoples lives, building confidence, resilience and community connection.

At the heart of our organisation is a commitment to breaking down barriers, widening access in areas of socioecomonic and rural deprivation, and creating more opportunities for women and girls to thrive in piping and drumming.

By investing in programmes linked to schools across the country, we are building brighter futures for young people and stronger connections within communities.

Our Vision

A Scotland where young people and musical traditions thrive.

Our Mission

To empower Scotland’s Schools with access to piping and drumming tuition, instruments and performance opportunities.

Purpose

To help young people across Scotland learn, achieve and belong through piping and drumming.

Philosophy

We believe that pipe bands are far more than musical ensembles. They build teamwork, resilience, confidence, discipline, camaraderie, and open doors to positive destinations, cultural exchange, and community pride. This is what drives our work for young people and for Scotland.

The Scottish Schools Pipes and Drums Trust began in 2007 as a small, local initiative with a clear mission of challenging inequality. On seeing the powerful impact of the Prestonpans school pipe band, trustees expanded the charity’s reach in 2014.

Since then, we’ve continued to grow and adapt, providing practical, flexible support that helps schools across Scotland increase piping and drumming opportunities.
